Oh Holly, so adept at describing the chores and how innate they are, your body knows what to do. Your spirit & imagination can go anywhere while you’re doing chores. I still remember some 40 plus years ago when waking after a tumultuous night of whatever argument or discovery of betrayal there had been and doing chores, step by step, exhausted or in puddles on the barn floor. The repetition of chores can be comforting. I love the way you gave so many examples of the same chores. 🙌🙏
Shoveling shit ,whether for 30 years or a lifetime, is such a great metaphor for what we do on many occasions. Transcending the shoveling to recovering a sense of calm and peace that enables our return from dropping out for awhile, whether in a barn stall or in an empty, quiet room, helps heal the hurts.
Exercise (regardless of the form) and laughter are truly the best self help one can do for free. Netflix had a piece on Arnold (one of the few Republicans I can say something nice about) and he had a 1.5 hour routine each morning for the dogs/donkey(lets in house!) that I absolutely adored and this piece reminded me of the grounding purpose animals give us. 💗
One day, those little people will be bigger, taller, smarter and I hope as kind to themselves as you are to yourself because you are the example, teacher and model to build upon. You will look at them and be proud and amazed and so filled with their love at all the blisters on your hands will be the awards for your role as MOM.
I love this so much Holly- I grew up with horses and still have one. But he lives the life of a prince on a beautiful farm I could never afford and I pay a kings ransom in monthly board. He is 24 now. I want to get back to taking care of stalls and all the horses. I felt every emotion you wrote here. Thank you for the beautiful, vivid memories and inspiration to get back to my roots. I am recently retired and feeling a bit lost.. your writing helps me remember myself.
So incredibly beautiful. But why make me cry on a Monday morning?

Yes - so many ways to deal with what we shovel daily…your descriptions are perfect.

I love your posts! Your writing is just beautiful. And also, I’m so sorry about your dog. I had wondered what happened with that…
Such beautiful words that describe that multitudes of life. Beauty and sorrow all at once!
Please don’t tell me what or who this is about. I’m already scared.
Haha! Now I wish I had made it more mysterious...
I read your story in my mind saying 'I' instead of 'you' and then your story came alive.

Beautifully written piece… of truth.
Beautifully written ❤️
I could smell the sweet scent of manure mixed with hay throughout this reading. Thank you! (Two minis for years and years….)
Holly! WOW! That’s a lively one!! Love it!
