I love the "love it all the same." Yes, let them be okay and accepting of a little stickiness, a little discomfort, a little sand. Let them be in the world and adjust their sails to whatever winds blow. A beautiful piece of writing. Thank you, Holly!
the Ocean is Peace for me. After living on an island for 4 years, moved to Cary, NC and 5 years later to Wilmington to get even closer to the ocean. Now in Charleston still an hour’s drive to the closest beach we are thinking of Florida, ever closer to the Ocean. My ashes will be scattered there… that final peace!
This is why I love people-watching at the beach and particularly those who no longer or never did feel self-conscious. The sense of freedom is beautiful, especially if the beach isn't particularly crowded (I live in Scotland, so we have only few crowded beaches on a warm day). The other deep pleasure is walking along a beach in winter with crashing waves that change the layout of a beach. We also have a local beach with a pod of harbour dolphins that can be seen usually between noon and 2pm most days!
Holly, your Dispatches from Costa Rica is written so well. Your honesty, compassion and certainly your love for your family always comes through straight to my heart. Yes, "love it all the same".
The idea that you can only be a good actor or writer is if you deeply suffer has always messaged me that I can be neither. So being normal is an incorrect assumption as well, I guess. Thank you for clarifying these false perspectives for me, Holly. We write because we cannot not. ❤️
Tender and thoughtful and brilliant, especially the brain like an old garden bed analogy. Also I love the idea that you think you’re “too normal” 😂
So normal!
