It has always intrigued me when others cannot see the potential in themselves that is so obviously there. It saddens me when they pick the path they think is theirs when there is another one that would bring so many more rewards to their life. They just can't see their own strength, that myself and others have never doubted. It's so easy to see others potential, yet so very difficult to see our own. So easy to give advice, yet so hard at times to follow that same advice for ones self, we can use another's beliefs in ourselves til we believe, up to a certain point , then we must take the initiative.
It was my eldest daughter’s first state championship long course meet. She swam butterfly. On the first day of the meet she was entered in the 100 meter fly. That we thought would be her best chance to win. She finished second and was very upset. She was fretting about the 50 meter event in 2 days. I think that size of her opponent was something she couldn’t beat. The young swimmer was a head taller and much bigger all around. Just before the event, her coach Steve, had a long quiet talk with her away from everyone. I could see that there was a change right from the starting block. It was like all business. She did look once at her rival. The gun sounded and the race was on, one length of the pool. She may have take only one breath, I was too excited to tell. She won by a body length, a state champion. Now she didn’t win all the time in fact she changed to backstroke and in HS here relay won state with an All American time! She swam in college and now has coached a YMCA and club team in her town. She also has lessons in her backyard pool. The summer lessons sell out far in advance. Probably a better coach that swimmer.
Thank you Holly for reminding us to always ask the second question. The why. How courageous of you to take ownership of your own “undoing” so you could learn to fly. Also, how fortunate you were to find the coach that could help guide you to discover yourself, to trust yourself and provide the opportunity to unfold your wings. Incredible.
