How this story made me smile & laugh in recognition. My husband’s mother made bread weekly for her 9 children, slathering a piece of fresh baked bread with homemade butter. I tried to follow making honey whole-wheat bread before children & a few times after before I realized that grocery store 12-grain loaves were much simpler & a whole lot easier than trying to compete with my husband’s phantom homemade youth!

I agree, there’s nothing better than the smell of freshly baked bread! Thank you for your lovely story and for making me laugh.

What a beautiful read, thank you. It's a bit of a reminder about my mum's cooking too. When I used to go home with my then boyfriend (now husband) we would sneak out for takeaway too.

Well I'm french, so this topic speaks volume to me ! Bread is at the core of most meals since I was a kid. I have sweet memories attached to bread from the countryside where I spent most of my childhood holidays. I tried baking my own with homemade sourdough, but it wasn't a success and never tried again.

The scent of baking bread in a wood cookstove is definitely a child magnet. A people pleaser beyond words. Devouring your delicious tale this morning was an unexpected treat. Keen to hear more of your farm stories in the days ahead, Holly. Cheers to all Grandmother bakers out there!

I totally know what you mean...baking bread is both totally satisfying and occasionally aggravating, especially when the weather (or life) makes things unpredictable. Oh well...I’m always happy to eat my mistakes.

Does homemade bread taste better as well? I don't remember homemade bread ever being inferior to anything I buy today. Odd.
